The card game Klondike Solitaire is a solitaire game that you play with the 52 playing cards of the French deck of cards without jokers. The aim of this game is to complete a total of four target piles, each with one suit, in the correct order.

In Klondike Solitaire, you will see seven sliding stacks in the lower game area. At the beginning of the game there is one card in the leftmost stack. To the right, the following sliding stacks each receive an additional card compared to the previous pile. Thus, the seventh stack on the far right at the beginning contains seven cards. In each sliding stack, the top card is revealed at the start.

In the upper left area of the game, there is the stockpile, which consists of the remaining 24 cards at the start of the game. Next to it, on the right side, stockpile cards are turned face up. In the upper right corner are the four foundation piles for the suits Clubs, Spades, Hearts, and Diamonds. There are initially no cards placed there.

1. Shifting the Cards Between the Sliding Stacks

In Klondike Solitaire, you move the face-up cards between the seven sliding stacks. It is crucial that you sort the playing cards in descending order. In addition, red and black suits of the sorted cards must alternate.

2. Revealing the Face-Down Cards in the Playing Field

By moving the face-up playing cards in the sliding stack or placing them in the foundation pile, you can reveal face-down cards. In Klondike Solitaire, this happens as soon as the top card of a pile in the playing field is still face down. If making a move uncovers a card, you should generally opt for that action. When faced with multiple options, you usually benefit from removing cards from the sliding stack that has the most face-down cards, thereby reducing the stack.

3. Use of the Reserve Cards from the Stockpile

You reveal the reserve cards from the stockpile. If the top revealed stockpile card meets the requirements for the correct order, you may place it in the sliding stack or on the foundation piles. In Klondike Solitaire, you can reveal the next reserve cards from the stockpile at any time. Once the stockpile is empty, turn the reserve cards face down again and then reveal them once more.

4. Continued Use of an Empty Sliding Stack

In Klondike Solitaire you get the opportunity to continue using an empty sliding stack. However, you may only place Kings on top of that. This step is often a decisive prerequisite for getting closer to the game goal. This is especially true as long as there are many face-down cards behind the revealed King in a sliding stack. Empty sliding stacks are then sometimes the only way to reveal face-down cards. As long as you cannot move a King, you should avoid emptying the stacks. The more sliding stacks you have, the more options you have.

5. Completing Each Foundation Pile

The more cards are revealed and available, the easier it is to complete the foundation piles in Klondike Solitaire. It makes sense to start early and not leave suitable cards constantly in the sliding stacks. Always start by placing a revealed Ace onto the empty foundation pile for the corresponding suit. Then, place the next higher cards of the same suit on top, until a foundation pile is completed with the King as the highest card.
